Stro Interview - 12/27/00

How did you get your deal with WCW?
I was overseas wrestling at the time when I was contacted by the WCW office to come tryout for them in Richmond Va.

Is it true that you were under contract for almost two years before actually being used on television?
Yeah

What made WCW finally decide to give you your break?
Eric Bishoff and I sat down and had a meeting to create a persona unlike any other in WCW. Thus the Maestro was born. A character similar to my former Gorgeous George persona, but with an added real life musical ability.

You had one of the best entrances in wrestling history (with the piano descending from the ceiling and glitter falling while you played your own entrance music). Who's idea was that and how difficult was it to pull off?
A mutual one of mine and the company's. The contraption which propelled me down playing piano took a lot of time and a lot of money to make. I did safety drills for two weeks leading up to my debut in case of any mishaps with the platform. A lot of time and effort. But the ending result was great.

You were in a high profile feud with the Cat that eventually involved James Brown and then you were suddenly off tv. What happened?
To some it all up in one word at the time, Politics.

What have you been up to since your release?
Wrestling independant promotions all over the country, going to schools and charitable events, doing appearances and starting my own wrestling school.

Do you ever see yourself getting back into one of the "Big 2" and what would you bring to each company if and when you are signed to one of them?
I want to wrestle for a company that respects me as well as my fans . A company that allows me to give 110% and to feel welcomed and be a major player. Nothing less.

Have you ever considered working for ECW and what is your opinion of them?
At one time. The guys over there wrestle their heart out and I respect that. I really hope the company can pull out of their rutt and get back in the game soon. There should be more main stream wrestling companies out there.

What is your opinion of WCW's current situation?
The problem doesn't lie in the talent. WCW has always had some of the best talent in the world and the guys and girls give it their all. It is the constant changing of management as well as lack of vision and direction. With the right leadership and know how, WCW could turn things around and be competitive again. It wasn't too long ago that they were.

What do you think was WCW's biggest problem while you were there and it's biggest problem now?
One again, The Politics. If only the company could work more as a unit rather than individualists, they would be real strong. From first match to main event, everyone involved should be built, not a certian few. This way the company is happy, the wrestlers are happy, the hard working crew is happy, and the fans are happy . Everyone benefits.

Do you still keep up with the WWF and WCW and if so, who are some of the people you enjoy watching?
Yeah.... Still enjoy watching my former WCW comrades in the WWF like Chris Benoit, Eddy Guerrerro,William Regal, Perry Saturn ,Chris Jericho, Dean Malenko etc. Those are by far some of the best wrestlers in the world. WWF has a very solid product right now with their great talent and production. WCW still has many great athletes such as Scott Steiner, Booker T, Sting, Jeff Jarett,General Rection,MIA,Sid,Kronic, Crowbar,Goldberg, Norman Smiley, etc.

You originally went by the name of Gorgeous George (before being on WCW television). Why was your name changed and who came up with the idea of "The Maestro?"
I did . Well after being in WCW for over a year being Gorgeous George. I heard from some sources that Randy Savage was wanting to debut his hew valet using the "Gorgeous George" name. I in turn contacted Eric Bischoff to discuss the shocking turn of events and to resolve the matter. We talked back and forth and thus the Maestro was born.

Is there anything that you'd like to say to your fans?
