What exactly does it mean to be called Champion?
By King

The Winner of the match and NNNEWWW World Wrestling Federation or WCW Champion..............What exactly do those words mean? Is there meaning in them? What exactly does it mean to be hold "the belt"? These are just a few things that I will be taking a look at in this edition of this column.

Every week we watch as countless competitors feud, and compete for the "sweetest prize in the game"....each week we see wrestlers battering their bodies for the right to hold "the belt" in their hands at the end of the match. On TV, the belt is portrayed as LIFE, it is the reason why every wrestler goes out there and wrestle. Every week we see The Rock feuding to climb the ladder to be able to call himself champion. Yet many believe "the belt" has lost its value, that "the belt" has lost its legacy and tradition that it use to hold. Many argue that be called the champion isn't worth a dime because "The Bookers" can put it around the waist of anyone they want. It is hard to argue these remarks, and comments because some of them are true. Hell even Vince Russo himself said that he can put the belt around anyone he wants and he proved that as he crowned actor David Arquette as WCW Champion. Now that is definitely a joke. That is a prime example on one way "the belt" has lost its value. Many also argue that Vince McMahon is guilty of the same thing, as he put his title around his own waist. Even though McMahon has been in the business for years, he is no wrestler, and doesn't deserve to wear "the gold" around his waist. But if "the belt" is so worthless, why is there even one around?

Even though "the belt" is many times, degraded, and disrespected....to many it still has meaning. To some their is still some pride left in being called Champion. World titles have a long legacy, of many respectable former champions. To many they still respect the honor of wearing the same title as one of their former heroes did. When being a young kid, dreaming of pro wrestling fame, one of the first things that comes to your mind is being the 'champ' one day. When taking bumps in the local training center, one of the things that is in your mind is holding that "belt" high in the air. Too many "the belt" keeps them going, its one of the reasons why they go out and compete to their fullest ability. There are still many wrestlers that take pride in holding "the belt", and hopefully there are many young stars coming up that will also take this pride, so that "the belt" will not become a joke.

One of my friends once said to me," That's dumb they do all that for some stupid belt." Sure its not life or death like they portray it on TV, but one of the main reasons that "the belt" is so meaningful is that people do "all that" for just "a belt". Men and Women both put their bodies on the line, they work so hard to hold "the belt", and for that very reason I believe "the belt" will not become a joke and that it will always remain "the sweetest prize in the game". As long as they keep working so hard, and doing all that....."the belt" will always mean all that.

PEACE OUT,
KING
