Chris Piatt

The State of Professional Wrestling Today
(posted August 14, 2000)

Wrestling fans where do I begin. My name is Chris Piatt and I would personally like to thank Bizzy Bunny, The Stro and everyone else here at thestro.com for giving me this opportunity to express myself on there site. For all of you that care to know a little about me please read on if not skip to the next paragraph. I’m a 15 year old male from Akron, OH. I’ve been watching wrestling for the better part of my life and it has made me become obsessed. I mainly watch all WWF shows and ECW. I keep up with WCW but don’t watch the shows.

Enough about me. Let’s get to the real reason why I am here. Right now professional wrestling in it’s entirety has some pretty serious issues to discuss. WWF’s Fully Loaded just passed us up and it was the WWF’s experimental PPV. The P.T.C. is after the WWF. WCW is really going all sorts of direction at the moment. With a new champ and that interview by Russo at the last PPV has really swirled up everything there. Then we have XPW, the newly hardcore wrestling federation out of California, attacking everyone’s favorite ECW at there own PPV. What big headlines there. This is just a little summery of what I am going to cover here today.

WCW is right now flying low to the ground trying to take off. We have Booker T as our new WCW World Champion. I have to say that is one of the best moves WCW could have ever made. African-American wrestler’s have never really gotten the respect they deserved. We had guys like Rocky Johnson, Charles Ritter(The Junkyard Dog), and Ron Simmons who have paved the way for the Booker T’s. Butch Reed, Koko B. Ware, Ahmed Johnson, Jackie, The Godfather, The Rock, Stevie Ray, Midnight, and many other’s are the great African-American athletes that wrestling has. Not all of the above mentioned have had great glory but they were there. Black athletes add a certain mentality to the world of professional wrestling and giving them a belt will not only improve the african-american viewership but will show that we all aren’t racist. WCW does have that lawsuit for discrimination from several wrestler’s who felt they weren’t giving the equal opportunity as everyone else. This will defiantly help them with giving Booker T the title. Now don’t get me wrong Booker T is a excellent athlete. He is one of the greatest black wrestler’s of all times. He is up there with Ron Simmons and The J.Y.D. No man was more deserving of the title. He has been in WCW for too long and was too over with the fans. Finally WCW is utilizing there younger talent. There are some great young guys in WCW. The interview with Hogan and Russo was without a shadow of a doubt a work. At least Hogan gave up his top spot and let someone else have the title to restore credibility to it(I’m sure Hogan didn’t really have a choice). Now since Hogan and all the rest of the old guys are gone ,at the moment, many stars will shine. Kanyon, Mike Awesome, Lance Storm, Shane Douglas, Booker T, Jeff Jarrett, Vampiro, and Scott Steiner are the guys who are taking it to the next level and bringing in the new young stuff. Hogan will be back possibly with the return of the NWO. Now please don’t do that WCW. Old angles don’t work anymore and are stale. Didn’t we already try this before.

I really don’t know what WCW can do to bring the ratings up. They have tried everything. What they need is something as major as the NWO the first time around. Thats what totally shocked the whole wrestling world and stole WWF’s spotlight. Also with WCW buying out WWF’s talent pool that made a big difference. Right now thats the only thing WCW could do right now is buy out WWF’s talent pool. I mean wouldn’t you watch Nitro to see the Rock,HHH, and Kurt Angle invading WCW. The other problem with this is that WWF has all of there talent signed to long term contracts so they can’t run away. Then again I was anyone in WWF I wouldn’t want to work for WCW anyhow. They have ruined some many careers. Another thing WCW could do is have a inter-promotional battle between themselves and either ECW or XPW. In which that leads me into my next topic between ECW and XPW.

ECW had Heatwave 2000 not to long ago on PPV and XPW decided to show up in the front row. XPW is a native of California and ECW was in there territory. There is also a existing lawsuit over the word of extreme. XPW caused some disruption during the PPV and was kicked out my security. Anyway I fight ensued in the parking lot. I’m sure all of you know the rest of the story. XPW doesn’t even compare to ECW. I have seen better local indy shows than XPW TV. Rob Black thinks he is such a tough guy just because he was in the porno business. This was nothing but publicity stunt on part of XPW. Not many people have ever heard of them and there were hardly ever on the Internet. This got them publicity but not in a positive way. Every column I have read have had nothing good to say about XPW. Neither do I. They only have one good person and thats Sabu. Terry Funk just made a special appearance. Not one of there talent has potential. Trust me I have watched there matches. I rather watch Chilly Willy Frazier battle C.W. Anderson than watch there crap. XPW is going no where fast. ECW still has a chance to become real big. If they can score a deal with FOX or USA they can make it big. They have great talent. I say they can take WCW and make them number 3. What ECW needs is a TV deal, a little better shows without so much commercials, new heavyweight champion other than Justin Incredible, and get rid of the network. Major things can happen here. We just got to wait and see cause it will take a while. Maybe ECW can borrow more talent from the WWF. That always has worked before(ex. Al Snow). Speaking of the WWF what an excellent PPV they just had.

Fully Loaded had to be the best PPV since WM2000. The entire card was excellent. That leap that Rikishi did on to Val Venis was almost as amazing as seeing Mick Foley fall off the Hell in A Cell. Val Venis is still the champ but he won’t be keeping it for very long. Perry Saturn obtained European Gold which this is to bring back credibility to that title. I see Eddy Guerrero go after the I.C. title next. He is very over with the fans. The Hardy Boys and Lita finally got a win. All 3 main events were better than what we all thought. Jericho, Beniot, and Angle all went out there and put on one helluva a show. They all deserve to main event. Now where does this put the WWF? I say in a very strong position at the moment. We are having new angles and storylines and thats what they needed. If they keep going like this they will be unstoppable. Whenever Austin comes back the roof will be blown off the place but they don’t need him though. They are doing great with out him. WWF’s state right now is a good one and it probably won’t change for awhile.

To wrap this up I want to comment on a couple things at RAW this week. Godfather lost his match so I see the return of everyone’s favorite Voodoo Daddy Papa Shango. This is great for Charles Wright because the Godfather gimmick was going no where. Good RAW with the Big Show returning to help Shane with the Undertaker. Lita and Trish are going to be major players. No boring Rock interview either.

So to everyone that read this very very long column I thank you very much for doing so and hope to see you again in the near future. Thanks again to everyone at thestro.com

God Bless everyone
Chris Piatt
